Dear Amy Tan

When it comes to your Story “Mother Tongue” i felt like i connected with you in many way. I also come from immigrant parents who traveled here to America from the Dominican Republic.i live in an immigrant household and just like you i have my own language i speak at home with, friends, family and others that many people wouldn’t treat me fairly if i were to speak with them.i agree with you when u said that “The fact that people in department stores,at banks, and at restaurants did not take her seriously, did not give her good service, pretended not to understand her,or even acted as if they did not hear her.”(pg 78)”. I agree with you because just like you have i’ve been in situations where i see many departments and even workers that, came from the same background as us but think more highly of themselves because there citizens or speak English better then my mom, disrespect my mother because she tries to communicate with the “proper English language” that they use. To add on I’ve also had to pretend to be my mom or other family members to convey what they are trying to say. This makes me see how unfair this world could really be, because even though I speak English I already know that many of the people around me feel hurd or stressed because their words and opinions aren’t being hurd. Just like you i believe my mothers english also affected my life in many ways, because she couldn’t speak the language when i was younger we weren’t able to obtain the best education, medical healthcare or even simple things like service in a store because of the way she spoke english. To add on me being the only english speaker in my house hold also put me down metally because at a young age i was put a lot of responsibility on top of my education because i had to fill in paperwork and pick up phone calls for my family. I also am the only one able to help my younger sibling with her homework and speak to her teachers which just adds to my heavy schedule. So Just like you I want to change people’s mindset and want to bring awareness to those people who feel insecure about their speaking just because of what they’ve been through.
