Rhetorical Analysis and Rhetorical Appeal for “3 Ways to Speak English” by Jamila Lyiscott

TEDSalon NY2013 TALK:

Today, a baffled lady observed the shell where my soul dwells And announced that I’m “articulate”

(When listening to the way the author pauses and says the word “articulate”in

‘Cause I’m “articulate”

(by using repetition towards the word “articulate” the author indicates that there is a powerful and important meaning towards it.)

So when my father asks, “Wha’ kinda ting is dis?”

(by changing the language to her own in “ “Wha’ kinda ting is dis?” the author not only transforms this into appropriate vocabulary for the text but also provokes the listeners/readers interest and curiosity to know more about the author and where she comes from)

And when I’m on the block I switch it up just because I can

So when my boy says, “What’s good with you son?”

I just say, “I jus’ fall out wit dem people but I done!”

( in these sentences by the author saying it in a constant rate of tone it evokes not only emotion but also give the reader/listener a sense of the authors background)

Now you may think that it is ignorant to speak broken English

But I’m here to tell you that even “articulate” Americans sound foolish to the British So when my Professor comes on the block and says, “Hello”

(by calling her English broken the author helps support a real life example towards a bigger problem in the world of language)

If I had the vocal capacity I would sing this from every mountaintop,

From every suburbia, and every hood

(by using vivid description and comparing mountaintops to the hood the author shows how “far” she wants her voice and story to reach)

I feel crazy like … I’m cooking in the bathroom

(by comparing crazy too cooking in the bathroom the author is giving the reader/listener a example so they can imagine how crazy, she feels, she really is)

“What’s good”

“Whatagwan”

And of course …“Hello”

Because I’m “articulate”

(by ending with her three different languages the author is ending her TED talk with her own factual data and statistics)
